Welcome
to Prairie du Chien!
We are proud to
be the oldest city on the Upper Mississippi River and we invite you
to visit us just as visitors have been coming by canoe, steamboat,
rail, air and auto for the past 300+ years.
Our city of
6,000 is bordered on the west by the Mississippi River and on the
east by towering bluffs. Located in Wisconsin’s driftless region
just north of the confluence of the Wisconsin and Mississippi
Rivers, Prairie du Chien is rich in natural resources and outdoor recreation,
from hunting and fishing to boating and canoeing to hiking, biking
and wildlife viewing. The abundance of natural beauty makes Prairie
du Chien an excellent choice for day trips, weekend getaways or
longer adventures.
Our long
history is filled with interesting stories of voyageurs, soldiers,
fur traders and all manner of river folk. Their stories make
Prairie du Chien a perfect choice for learning about the past. The
recently restored Villa Louis and Fort Crawford
Museum each tell fascinating stories, and the city is dotted with historic
sites sure to pique your curiosity about this old river city.
A wide
diversity of businesses in Prairie du Chien has kept our economy
growing and we are always seeking to add to our business community.
Prairie du Chien was designated a Wisconsin Main Street community in
2005. The redevelopment of our downtown has already begun. New
commercial and retail space and facelifts of existing businesses all
along the downtown corridor are providing residents and visitors
with more choices; and the downtown activity is serving as a
catalyst for other commercial and industrial business throughout the
city.
We are proud of
our fine public and private schools and we are pleased to have
regional medical facilities that are the envy of cities our size.
The city provides excellent services and recreational opportunities,
including a great library and many parks with indoor and outdoor
swimming pools.
Our setting,
our history, our commerce and our committed citizens all combine to
make Prairie du Chien a great place to invest, work, live or visit.
Enjoy!
