NEWS FROM THE PRAIRIE DU CHIEN LIBRARY

City Employees Rich Stovey and Dirk Steiner have spent quite a few hours at the library over the past few months, and we would like to show you the results of their hard work.

The first project was a new shelving unit which gives us better sightlines in the Children's area, takes up less space and holds more books than the old ugly unit. Because of the serpentine design with triangular pieces and the heavy-duty materials, it was a difficult project to put together.
The second project was a renovation of part of the Wisconsin room.  These new cabinets and the custom base units that Rich and Dirk built replace a conglomeration of steel utility cabinets, wood bookcases, old tables, and stacks of boxes and bins.  We not only have improved storage, but we have a useful workspace that doesn't interfere with patrons' use of the the roo

We still have some carts that we have to find room for, but Rich and Dirk have much improved our situation, and we'd like to give them a big THANK YOU!

Donations

The Library is pleased to accept donations of books, audiobooks, videos, DVDs and other material. We do evaluate each donation. If it is not needed for our collection, we reserve the right to transfer it to another library, sell it, or otherwise dispose of it. If materials or funds for specific materials are donated in memory or in honor of a person or group, we will affix a bookplate or label to that effect before we make the item available for public use.

We are restricted by union rules from accepting any volunteer help for library duties, but we welcome volunteers for special events and occasionally for other reasons. Please come talk to us if you are interested.

Library Cards & Access

Library Cards: Your Prairie du Chien Memorial Library Card can be used at any other library that is a member of NetSouthwest – ask us for a directory!

Library cards are issued FREE for Wisconsin residents; Iowa residents pay $20 per year. Replacement library cards are $3. All applicants are required to provide a driver’s license or state ID number; patrons under 18 must have parent or guardian signature and ID number on the application.

Please bring your library card with you when you come to use the internet or check out library materials. Patrons are legally responsible for all items borrowed on their card; parents/guardians are legally responsible for all items checked out on cards for which they have signed the applications.

Materials, Check-out and Overdue Policies: We have books, magazines, kits (books with cassettes or puppets), large print books, audiobooks on CD and cassette, CDs, videos and DVDs available for checkout. All videos and DVDs have a three-day checkout; everything else can be checked out for two weeks. Most items can be renewed. We also have many reference, community information, local history and genealogy materials and newspapers which can be used in the library. All materials may be returned through the outside book return slot when the library is closed. The library needs to get materials back on time so that they are available for other patrons, so we do charge fines for overdue materials. The rates are $1.00 per day for video/DVD and $.10 per day for all other materials. If an item is lost or damaged, the patron will be charged the replacement cost plus a small processing fee.

If you have internet access at home, you can place holds on materials you want, and renew items you have already checked out (see Online Catalog link)

Internet Access: All patrons are welcome to use the internet, but patrons under the age of 18 must have a consent form signed by a parent or guardian. We require patrons to read and adhere to the library’s internet policy.
